The fundamentals of antimicrobial susceptibility testing, emphasizing both the methodology and inherent challenges will be covered. We will delve into interpreting these complex reports, offering practical strategies to make informed treatment decisions. Additionally, we will address common pitfalls and misconceptions in antimicrobial susceptibility testing. This comprehensive overview aims to enhance your understanding and application of antimicrobial stewardship in clinical practice.Dubraska Diaz-Campos, DVM, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Clinical Microbiology at the College of Veterinary Medicine, The Ohio State University. She served as a professor of Infectious Diseases of Domestic Animals for eight years at the University of Zulia, Venezuela. Then, she completed a residency program at the CVM, Auburn University, Alabama. Currently, Dr. Diaz-Campos is dedicated to researching and promoting the implementation of antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASP) in veterinary medicine. She is also working towards optimizing diagnostic testing, including antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Since 2023, she became the Chair of the CLSI-Veterinary Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Subcommittee (VAST). At OSU, she also serves as the Director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory, the infection control officer and co-leader of the CVM OSU ASP.This program has been approved for 1 hour of continuing education credit for veterinarians in jurisdictions that recognize RACE approval.
