Stewardship Seminar: Role of Veterinary Nurses in Antimicrobial Stewardship

When:  Nov 25, 2024 from 13:00 to 14:00 (ET)

2024-2025 Companion Animal Antimicrobial Stewardship and Infection Control Seminar Series presents:

Role of Veterinary Nurses in Antimicrobial Stewardship

Veterinary nurses play an important role in the veterinary team but are often underutilized when it comes to antimicrobial stewardship. This session by Dr. Madeleine Stein aims to explore the role that human nurses play in stewardship programs, and how this might translate to the veterinary field. Additionally, we will cover some success stories from veterinary medicine and what lessons have been learned.

Madeleine Stein, BVetMed, MSc, DACVIM, is an assistant professor in small animal internal medicine at Louisiana State University. She received her veterinary degree from the Royal Veterinary College in London before moving to Canada for a rotating internship at the Atlantic Veterinary College. While there she developed an interest in companion animal antimicrobial stewardship, particularly the roles of the various stakeholders outside the prescriber. This led to a masters focusing on cat and dog owner perceptions of antimicrobial resistance in their pets and carried through to her internal medicine residency at Tufts University, where she developed a survey to assess doctor and nurse uptake of the hospital stewardship program. At LSU she is heavily involved in teaching stewardship and infection control to both pre-clinical and clinical students and hopes to develop a stewardship program with the rest of the infection control team.

This program has been approved for 1 hour of continuing education credit for veterinarians in jurisdictions that recognize RACE approval.
